Flying

I’m not a good flyer.  The first thing I do when I get on a plane is check to see where all the emergency exits are.  The second thing I do is figure out who I’m going to have to step on to get at them.  ‘Cause, I know that if something happens to the plane, it’s not going to be ‘Hands at your sides, single file, no touching, no talking.’  I mean – if something happens to that plane, I do not believe that the passengers are going to pull their oxygen masks down and breathe normally.

I haven’t flown in 49 years, back when I was 17. I went up 5 times in a two year period and dreaded each event. Funny thing is, I know large jets are less likely to crash than small planes, yet the one time I took a small plane (from Ocho Rios, Jamaica to Montego Bay, even though it was sliding all over the place and kind of shaky, I had a feeling if something bad happened we might be able to glide in. Not in a big jet though. Plus from the small plane I could see the ground. It made me feel more grounded. Most people are afraid of taking off or landing, they’re ok once they’re up there. Not me. The takeoff and landing are exciting enough to draw me away from my own fear. The first time I took a jet, from Miami to Kingston, I watched the takeoff then pulled out a New York Times magazine and held it to my face for 5 minutes or more before I realized I had it upside down. I did not like it. But I can talk about it all day. Just like mountain climbing. You’ll never see me on a cliff, but I admit I’m intrigued with others doing it. I have done some analyzing and truly believe I am not as afraid of flying as I claim. I believe I use my fear of flying as an excuse to not have to be anywhere in a hurry. Like if someone I know clear across the country dies and I don’t show up at the funeral, no one can yell at me for not being there, because a bus would taken too long, and as they already know – as I made a point of telling them a hundred times over – “I don’t fly, not for anything.”

  2. Whoa! This blog looks exactly like my old one!
It’s on a totally different subject but it has
pretty much the same layout and design. Superb choice
    of colors!
